Principal, The Emerge School for Autism
Leigh began her education career in general education, but quickly realized her passion was with students who struggled to succeed in the general education setting. In her 14 years in education, she has taught general education, English Language Learners, Response to Intervention and special education students in three states. In New Orleans, she built out the first Response to Intervention Program at her school. Her school leader attributed the school’s 22 point growth to the RtI program implemented that year. She was then was asked by the charter network to replicate the program across the five schools in the network. Upon moving to Baton Rouge, she began consulting with The Emerge Center about the possibility of expanding their school readiness programs to include a chartered elementary school. In 2016-2017, Leigh participated in the writing of the charter, which was approved by the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board in May 2017. The Emerge School for Autism is expected to open in the fall of 2018 with their first class of kindergartners.
